if it were just a matter of velocity,then everyone should run an exhaust system as small as possible. You should consider state of tune and goals. If you have the right cams, the cams will create the backpressure needed to speed intake velocity. Look at Formula 1 and Indy cars or other race cars without mufflers and cats. The need for backpressure is adressed by using the right cams. A bigger exhaust system will generally sacrifice bottom end power and torque for top end benefits. By using different sizes you can customize hp and torque curves to your desired needs.
